This image is part of a series I call “Happy Tools”. My tool chest holds a wide variety of tools that I have acquired over the years. Some were my grandfather’s, some my late father’s, and some I purchased throughout my lifetime. Whether I am making a repair or building something new I derive a great deal of pleasure using these tools. When I use my father’s tools his presence is with me as I recall how he taught me the right way to use the tool. I feel his gentleness, his no-nonsense approach, and his love toward his son who was so much less meticulous. My grandfather passed away before I was born. When I use his tools, I feel a connection to the man I was named for. I think about some of the things he made with these tools that are still with me today. All of the tools have their own special patina and wear after years of use. Their surface texture and shape are a work of art in themselves. Color added to these photographic images adds beauty and turns these ordinary tools into pieces of pop art. Looking at them makes me happy.
