Description
This image tells an important part of Chicago's history. The view is of a small portion of the skyline and is from the Art Institute, where one of the galleries crosses the Illinois Central Railroad tracks. The steel structure is exposed as a tribute to the bones of the skyscraper which is such an important part of Chicago's identity. The Prudential Building in the center of the image is a 41 story sky scraper built in 1955 that was for a long time the tallest building in Chicago. It is now eclipsed by many much taller structures, such as the one seen directly behind it. As a child it was a special treat for me to be taken to the observation deck. The IC tracks in the foreground once dominated the lake front, until builders and even the Chicago park district started to buy "air rights" to build over the tracks. On left and right edges show both the new and old in Chicago architecture. This photo is perfect for anyone who loves Chicago's architecture and stories.
