Artist's Description
Pottery of the Pueblo People of the Southwest United States has been around for centuries. Pots were made from local clay and served very utilitarian purposes, but were also works of art. By the 1900s there was a shift from the utilitarian uses to more decorative pieces in demand by non-Native peoples. Each individual tribe has very distinctive styles as can be seen in my “out of the darkness” series of photos.
These images pay tribute to the craftsmanship of the individual potter and his/her heritage. The theme of going from dark to light represents how the indigenous people of North America were made nearly extinct by the newcomers from across the ocean, but today have somehow been able to preserve at least some remnants of their rich cultural heritage, and are seeing a renewed pride among their youngest members.
This piece is made by husband and wife team, Merton and Linda Sisneros of the Santa Clara Pueblo. The highly polished black and matte black finish...
About Ira Marcus
The origin of my name means watchful or observant. I always thought that was appropriate for someone who likes to make images from what he sees. I started with photography when I was about 11 years old after receiving a hand-me-down Brownie box camera. My approach toward photography is to stop and smell the roses. It is a simplistic adage, but rings true to how I create images. I slow down and stop to see beauty in everyday objects and the natural world, and use the magic of photography to share my vision with others. While I don't expect others to necessarily see the same thing that I saw while making my photographs, my goal is that my images will evoke a special feeling, mood, or emotion for the viewer.
