ABSTRACT - WILDLIFE - NATURE - LANDSCAPE - FORAL - STILL LIFE - ARCHITECTURE - AUTOMOTIVE - TRAVEL - RURAL SCENES
These images were made exclusively for the exhibit, "Art in Artifacts - Where History Meets Art", at the Elgin History Museum in Elgin Illinois, running June 2020 through May 2021. For several years as a volunteer, I have been photographing archived artifacts for the museum's on-line catalog. The artifacts are quite varied and tell the story of a time, person, place, or event in Elgin history. Those photos are strictly "record" shots. But, for this exhibit I added my personal artistic expression to the images. Some are abstract macro views. Others emphasize patterns, textures, and juxtaposed shapes. There are digitally manipulated pieces meant to be whimsical. Several simply highlight the skill of the artisan who created the item years ago. In many cases the design elements of the object tell us something about the history of the period in which the object was created. All of the images are meant to help us see more than the historical context of everyday objects, and illustrate how every item has its own intrinsic beauty. These images make great wall art, but also work very well on all of the products offered here. Special thanks to Elgin History Museum Director, Elizabeth Marston, and Curator, Beth Nawara, for enthusiastically endorsing the concept for the exhibit, and for allowing me access to the museum's archives. Thanks also to Elgin Historical Society Board of Directors for authorizing the exhibit.
